What is capsule endoscopy?
Capsule endoscopy uses a small camera capsule to examine the small intestine. You swallow the capsule, which travels through the digestive tract and records images. Then the specialist reviews those images. However, the capsule cannot take biopsies or provide treatment.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muharrem Taşkoparan assesses the need for capsule endoscopy at his YDA Center clinic in Ankara. He first reviews your symptoms and existing results. Then he considers the most appropriate investigation.
When might capsule endoscopy help?
The method can help investigate selected small bowel problems. For example, these include unexplained bleeding, suspected Crohn’s disease or certain tumours. The doctor assesses whether the test suits your clinical needs. Therefore, it is not a routine test for every digestive symptom.
How does it differ from other procedures?
Upper endoscopy examines the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. Colonoscopy examines the colon and rectum. In contrast, a small bowel capsule provides images of much of the small intestine. It does not replace standard endoscopy or colonoscopy.
In addition, standard procedures may allow tissue sampling or treatment. A capsule only records images. Consequently, a finding may require another investigation or procedure.
Preparation and examination
First, the specialist checks whether the test is suitable. He also considers possible narrowing in the bowel. Then the team gives personal fasting and preparation instructions. Follow that plan carefully.
You swallow the capsule with water. As it moves through the bowel, it sends images to a recording device. Afterwards, the doctor reviews the images alongside other test results. The capsule usually leaves the body in the stool.
Limitations and risks
The main purpose is imaging rather than treatment. The capsule cannot remove polyps or stop bleeding. In addition, bowel narrowing may cause the capsule to become stuck. This is called capsule retention. It may require further intervention.
Therefore, the doctor weighs expected benefits against individual risks before recommending the test.
Frequently asked questions
Does capsule endoscopy replace colonoscopy?
No. The tests have different roles and capabilities. The specialist chooses according to the area and problem under investigation.
Can the capsule take a biopsy?
No. It records images only. A suspicious finding may need further assessment.
Is the test suitable for everyone?
No. The specialist reviews clinical need and risks first. In particular, possible bowel narrowing needs attention.
